Summary
Malo and welcome to Episode 62 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika peoples sports on this overcast and slightly windy Wednesday morning 31 August 2022 – coming to you from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
In tennis – Serena Williams’ sponsors are rolling out the red carpet to commemorate what is likely to be her final US Tennis Open at Forest Hills.
Gatorade and Nike each released signature Ad campaigns honoring the icon. Nike got Beyonce to voice their Ad and also created a figure skating-inspired dress made of six layers to honor her six tournament titles.
Her Nike tennis sneakers contain a diamond-encrusted Swoosh and solid gold lace deubrés and 400 individual hand-set diamonds.
And if all that isn’t enough, Serena Williams graces this month’s cover of TIME Magazine.
Okay so the fans are also showing their love, with 71,332 in attendance at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center yesterday – the second-highest attendance in U.S. Open history — and even more impressive, it was for the first-round and not finals.
During the evening match play, 29,402 fans shattered the US Open attendance record to see Williams, and notably, the majority of fans left before or during the following match featuring men’s star Nick Kyrgios.
Williams will play in potentially her final singles match tonight against Anett Kontaveit — who is currently ranked second in the world.
Go Serena Go!
In rugby – FINALLY someone has said it!
Sir John Kirwan has called for All Blacks Captain Sam Cane to sit out a Test (or two) and to be replaced by Blues Captain, Dalton Papali’i who last featured at blindside and off the bench in the Ireland series.
This is stating the obvious, but no one in the Kiwi media or top rugby circles will say it – Sam Cane is a bit of a dud.
If he is indeed replaced by Papali’i it will cruelly expose Cane for his lack of impact in ball carries and contesting the breakdown, plus his poor decision-making and leadership under pressure.
Whew glad to get that off my chest.
In rugby league – NRL Games Round 25 Thu Eels v Storm at CommBank Stadium, Fri Bulldogs v Sea Eagles at Accor Stadium, Roosters v Rabbitohs at Allianz Stadium. On Sat NZ Warriors v Titans at Mt Smart Stadium, Dragons v Broncos at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium and Cowboys v Panthers in Townsville.
In football – Man U has signed Brazilian forward Antony after agreeing a transfer fee of £86Million with Ajax for the 22-year-old. Antony has 31 goals and 27 assists in 134 games for Ajax and Sao Paulo, and two goals and two assists in nine internationals for Brazil.
In boxing – Youtuber Jake Paul will fight MMA legend Anderson Silva in October. Silva was the UFC Middleweight Champion from 2006-2012 with 10 title defenses winning 16 fights in a row – a record to this day. However, Silva is now 47 years old and only won one of his last nine UFC fights.
You know I once played in the same team as Sir John Kirwin – no not the All Blacks, OK not exactly the same team, BUT the same grade – Auckland Club rugby 3rd division for Marist.
