Summary
Malo and welcome to Episode 47 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika peoples sports on this beautiful Tuesday morning 16 August 2022 – coming to you from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
And we start with rugby –
Two players who really stood out for the All Blacks forwards smashing the Springboks and dominating the Test in the cauldron of Ellis Park – Tongan warriors Samisoni Taukei’aho and Shannon Frizzel; both relished the ball carries and smashing the Boks in tackles. Simply the best!
Japan women and Uruguay men won the World Rugby 7s Challenger Series 2022 and so will feature at Rugby World Cup 7s 2022 in Cape Town on 9-11 September and the HSBC 7s Series which kicks off in Dubai on 4-6 November for men while the women start in Dubai on 2-3 December 2022.
BREAKING NEWS in the NRL for all the wrong reasons again – Hair follicle testing for drugs use is set to become a hot topic for the NRL after Newcastle were forced to investigate video footage of their skipper Kalyn Ponga emerging from a toilet cubicle with a teammate over the weekend.
The fact that Newcastle Knights skipper Kalyn Ponga was out drinking while recovering from a serious concussion has led to calls for the superstar No. 1 to be stripped of the captaincy.
In boxing – the JOSHUA-USYK II fight will be on in the early hours of Sunday morning in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, 12.30am to be exact, so that fans in the UK can watch the fight at 10.30pm British time and at 5.30pm on America’s east coast and 2.30pm out west at US$20 a pop on DAZN. Pay-per-view in Britain is 27 pounds.
In netball – Eleven-time world champions Australia and defending champions New Zealand remain first and second respectively while England have dropped from third to fourth in the World Netball rankings after the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Jamaica move up to third after taking silver at the Games.
While Tonga and Fiji secured places in the Netball World Cup in South Africa in 2023 through the Oceania Netball World Cup Qualifiers, with a further eight teams set to join them through qualifiers in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
In football – word from inside Old Trafford is that the Manchester United squad have now suffered so many humiliations in full media glare that they’re a broken squad. One theory yet to be professionally diagnosed is that they are suffering a form of “football PTSD” (post-traumatic stress disorder).
While we’re on Man U, the trial of Britain’s most decorated football player – the absolute nutter, Ryan Giggs has heard evidence from the sister of his ex-girlfriend that she was “left in shock” after the former Manchester United star allegedly assaulted her before, she claims, threatened her saying “I’ll head butt you next.”
Ryan Giggs alledgedly said this while lying on top her sister, er his girlfriend, in a fight for her mobile phone!
