And we start with rugby league
The opening game of the ORIGIN Series 2023 at Adelaide Oval tonight will show whether, Maroons Coach Billy Slater is a genius, or a dud for selecting Reece Walsh ahead of incumbent fullback Kalyn Ponga, who starred in last year’s series clinching victory.
Slater is confident Queensland’s only debutant Walsh will handle his ORIGIN debut, despite a tendency to make errors at times. “Have you seen Reece Walsh play?” Slater responded when asked if the Broncos young gun was a risky selection.
Meanwhile NSW Blues Coach Brad Fittler has admitted the selection of debutants, Tevita Pangai Jr, Hudson Young and Nicho Hynes were selection gambles for ORIGIN I in Adelaide tonight, but he has seen enough to know they will deliver.
“All three have been very positive and I have enjoyed watching them interact with the other players,” Fittler said.
In rugby union
The Webb Ellis Cup arrives in France on an Emirates A380 later today, marking 100 days to go, as Rugby World Cup Champions, South Africa pass the iconic trophy to hosts France.
RWC2023 is the fastest-selling such event ever, with almost 2.5 million tickets sold to date and 600,000 travelling fans expected to enjoy rugby’s biggest celebration.
In football
Only nine EPL teams ended this season with the same man in charge at the beginning, with a record 14 Managers sacked throughout the season.
But a change of Manager and his assistants rarely changed anything.
Chelsea plus relegated Southampton and Leeds all fired two Managers each, yet Clubs that finished in the top six did not sack their Managers.
In NBA
The Miami Heat advanced to the NBA Finals after routing Boston 103-84 yesterday, denying the Boston Celtics a historic comeback from 3-0 down in the series.
Miami will play the Nuggets, who are in the NBA Finals for the first time, having swept LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference final.
In boxing
Australian boxing star, Tim Tszyu could be forced to withdraw from his WBO Super Welterweight fight on the Gold Coast, against tough Mexican, Carlos Ocampo on 18 June, after requiring emergency surgery on a dog bite to his right arm at the weekend.
Ummm makes you wonder…
And that’s a wrap!
