Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 04 Episode 88 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this beautiful sky-blue Thursday morning 30 March 2023.

Coming to you from paradise, on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!

And we start with rugby union: 28 Men’s and Women’s teams are all ready to go in the world-famous Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong 7s starting tomorrow, which sees the iconic tournament include the Women’s Series for the first time in its 46-year history.

Australia and USA women can qualify for Paris 2024 this weekend by advancing to the Cup quarter-finals, potentially joining New Zealand and hosts France

The Men’s Series has seen five different winners – Australia, Samoa, South Africa, Argentina and New Zealand through the opening seven tournaments this Series.

New Zealand currently sit top of the Series standings with 120 points, followed by Argentina 108, trailed by France with 95 points and Fiji and Australia both tied with 94 points with just four events to go.

So the big question is – can Fiji Men bring home the bacon from Hong Kong again?

In Rugby League: As Dolphins skipper Jesse Bromwich prepares to power into WIN Stadium for his 300th NRL game on Saturday, a myriad of statistics will be rolled out to mark the milestone.

Including, 13 years after making his debut at the Storm, Bromwich becomes the 46th player and just the sixth Kiwi to join the 300 Club.

His CV includes three NRL Premiership titles, three Player of the Year Awards at the Storm, 28 finals appearances and 34 Tests for the Kiwis.

But the key stat that is the mark of the man – he started 277 of his 300 NRL games.

The battling Wests Tigers are preparing to offer 34-year old NRL Premiership-winning halfback, Mitchell Pearce A$1.5Million for two years, in a desperate move to bring him back home from French Super League Club, the Catalans Dragons to save the endangered Tigers and save Tim Sheens.

In Boxing: An Olympic youth boxer, Maksym Galinichev has been killed in the Ukraine war. The 22-year-old won gold for Ukraine at the European Youth Championship in 2017 and again 2018

He also won the silver medal at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. Rest in Peace Brother.

In Football: BREAKING NEWS: Indonesia has been stripped of hosting the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in May after the Governor of the island of Bali refused to host Israel’s team.

Several national soccer teams from the Pacific, including Fiji are due to play in the tournament.

In SPORTSBIZ: The Melbourne Cricket Ground is pushing hard to host this year’s NRL Grand Final as well as hosting 2027 Rugby World Cup games. The NRL Grand Final has always been in Sydney apart from the 2021 decider in Brisbane due to COVID. The MCG offers 35,000 more seats than any other stadium in Australia and that’s like A$4Million extra.
