Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 07 Episode 55 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 27 November 2023.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

In rugby league

The St George Illawarra Dragons are set for a massive financial boost with Australia’s second-richest person, Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest, valued at A$33.29Billion on the Financial Review 2023 Rich List, set to sign on as their major club sponsor.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the billionaire mining magnate will ink a A$1.2Million per year deal for his energy company, Squadron Energy to become the Dragons’ front-of-shirt sponsor from 2025 once the club’s agreement with current principal partner St George Bank ends.

In Football

No player in English Premier League history has reached half a century of goals quicker – Erling Haaland doing so in 48 games. The previous record holder Andrew Cole, who played for Manchester United and Newcastle Untied, took 65 games to reach the mark.

Haaland scored in the 27th minute to give host City a lead it only relinquished in the 80th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold leveled for Liverpool.

“We played really well, excellent performance,” City Manager Pep G told BBC Sport. “I don’t have anything to complain or regret about how proud I am of the team.”

In combat sports

Conor McGregor is doing what he does best – stir up trouble.

The mad Irishman has predicted a “landslide victory” for world champion, Katie Taylor against British fighter, Chantelle Cameron in a Light Welterweight title rematch, amid accusations McGregor incited hate and made inflammatory comments during a violent night of riots in Dublin’s city center earlier this week.

Finally in Rugby Union

The New Zealand Rugby Pasifika Strategy 2024-2029 states that 36 percent of contracted players in the Black Ferns or Black Ferns 7s between 2021 and 2025 identify as Pasifika players.

For the All Blacks and All Blacks 7s, 38 percent of contracted players identify as Pasifika.

In the Super Rugby Aupiki competition for women, 30 percent of contracted players are from Pasifika origin while 26 percent of players in the Super Rugby Pacific New Zealand teams are Pasifika players.

And that’s a wrap!
