Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 05 Episode 24 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on a bright and sunny Wednesday morning 26 April 2023.

Coming to you from paradise, on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!

In brilliant news for Women’s rugby: World Rugby has announced “Accelerate”, a new framework for growth and targeted investment that will supercharge the development of Women’s rugby around the world.

A new targeted investment approach, “Accelerate” will see World Rugby partner with national unions, governments and like-minded brands to raise standards, on and off the field on the road to Rugby World Cup 2033 in the USA.

Initially focusing on 20 unions capable of qualifying for the Rugby World Cup 2025 in England, “Accelerate” will help build and co-fund programs, competitions, new roles, resources and support structures for partner national unions, increasing the capability and capacity needed to create a stronger, more competitive and sustainably growing Women’s game around the world.

Great news.

In rugby league: Jack Wighton has reportedly shunned an offer of A$4 million over four years to join Wayne Bennett at the Dolphins and an NRL record A$4.4 million four-year deal to finish his career with the Raiders in Canberra, to sign with the South Sydney Rabbitohs for four years.

And yesterday, the Storm beat a gutsy New Zealand Warriors 22-30 on the back of big shifts from Cameron Munster, Nick Meaney and Nelson Asofa-Solomona in a classic but brutal ANZAC Day clash at AAMI Park. The New Zealand Warriors deserved plenty of credit after a series of injuries reduced them to an empty bench.

And earlier at Allianz Stadium, a Luke Keary field goal in the 74th minute got the Sydney Roosters home 27-26 against Saint George Dragons after another ANZAC Day classic with nine tries scored in total.

In football: Tottenham sacked their interim Manager Cristian Stellini on Monday after Chairman Daniel Levy branded Sunday’s 6-1 defeat at Newcastle “wholly unacceptable”.

Stellini was only put in charge 29 days ago, after his former boss Antonio Conte left the Club. Stellini won only one of his four games in charge.

And in SportsBiz: The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics are still more than a year away, but organizers have received 4 million applications from fans, mainly from the UK and the US, for tickets in the most recent lottery.

The Olympics will cost an estimated US$4.7Billion to stage with the vast majority of revenue coming from media rights, sponsorships, tickets and merchandise sales.

In athletics: British great, Sir Mo Farah finished ninth in his final London Marathon on the weekend. The top three was rounded out by Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor and Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola, who had been left behind by the remarkable young Kenyan, Kelvin Kiptum who ran the second fastest time in history of 2:01.27 to win, shattering the course record, in an astonishing performance that at one stage threatened to break Eliud Kipchoge’s world best, finishing just 18 seconds short.

Run Forrest run.
