In rugby league

Canberra Raiders Head Coach Ricky Stuart has revealed back-rower Corey Harawira-Naera is facing immediate medical retirement following his mid-game seizure earlier this year.

Harawira-Naera hasn’t played since collapsing on the field during the Raiders’ clash against the Rabbitohs in Round 13.

The New Zealand Test rep was sidelined for the rest of the season as doctors tried to get to the bottom of what triggered his seizure.

It was expected Harawira-Naera would return in 2024, but Stuart is resigned to the Kiwi never playing again.

“It is really sad for the kid… it’s a tragedy actually,” Stuart told local media.

“The medical reports we are getting is that he is very unlikely to play again.

“At 28, that’s tough, but we are supporting him and looking for a pathway for him after football, in the game and in the Club.”

In BREAKING RUGBY rugby union news

There are fears for the future of Super Rugby’s Melbourne Rebels who are under immense financial pressure – A$9Million in debt, a Rugby Australia inspection of their books has revealed.

News Corp is reporting that Rugby Australia cannot bail out the Rebels but a forced merger with the ACT Brumbies, who also have financial issues, is a possibility.

In football

BOOM another one bites the dust – Steve Cooper was sacked by Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. The 44-year-old Manager had been under fire throughout a dismal run of just one win in 13 Premier League games, including five defeats from their last six games, leaving Forest just one place above the relegation zone.

Reports suggest the Premier League strugglers are set to hire Nuno Espirito Santo.

In Combat Sports

“I knock AJ out, I deliver what I was supposed to deliver years ago. I deliver what they ran from. I deliver what he asked for US$50million, so I’m going to give him a US$50million knockout,” Deontay Wilder said at a media conference yesterday.

But hang on, isn’t he fighting Kiwi-Samoan, Joseph Parker this weekend, so could he be counting his chickens before they hatch?

Even so, the cocky American has warned fans to “not blink” during his comeback fight.

Looks like somebody gonna hit the canvas!

In SportsBiz

If sports fans have made one thing clear in 2023, it’s that they have been more eager than ever to attend live games.

The headlines throughout the year provided almost uniform testament to that, as the NBA, NHL, MLS, NWSL, the US Open tennis, the WNBA, the MLB and the NFL all reached record attendance levels,

But will the good times last?

And that’s a wrap!
