Summary

Malo and welcome to Season 3 Episode 20 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this bright and sunny Thursday morning 20 October 2022, coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! In rugby – one thing the Women’s Rugby World Cup is doing across the rugby playing world, especially in Fiji and New Zealand is, making grown men cry! It’s true and by the bucket loads too – tough beer-drinking, rugby-playing blokes who never ever watched Women’s rugby before have been brought to tears watching their Women’s national teams play. Now isn’t that something? Remember the joy when Rugby New Zealand signed a six-year NZ$120Million deal in 2021 giving French construction giant “Altrad” jersey-naming rights for all their All Blacks teams – all of them, including Fozzy’s team, Portia’s teams, the Maori All Blacks and the AB’s Under-20s. Now the NZRFU is nervously awaiting a Paris Criminal Court verdict on eccentric billionaire Mohammed Altrad’s briber and corruption charges. In rugby league – geez the PNG Kumuls should have won their opening game of the Rugby League World Cup vs Mate Ma’a Tonga yesterday. Now they play the Cook Islands and Wales. Meanwhile, BIG Mal has named six debutant Kangaroos to face Scotland in the RLWC: Nathan Cleary, Liam Martin, Isaah Yeo, Matt Burton, Campbell Graham and Lindsay Collins. In netball – Australia has kept the Constellation Cup alive, putting rivals New Zealand in an “absolute chokehold” in Melbourne last night to claim a 62-47 win. It means the Diamonds now only need to win game four on the Gold Coast on Sunday to reclaim the Constellation Cup. Meanwhile the dispute between the Diamonds’ players and officials over new sponsor, Hancock Prospecting continues courtside, after the players backed indigenous player Donnell Wallam who said she was uncomfortable wearing the branding. Good on ya – go girls go! In football – a group of former and current Iranian sports figures have sent a letter to FIFA urging it suspend the Iranian Football Federation and ban Iran from playing at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar saying, “Iran’s brutality and belligerence towards its own people has reached a tipping point.” Only in America – the NFL’s Carolina Panthers franchise has just sacked Head Coach, Matt Rhule with four years still to run on his contract. This means that the former college football head coach will be paid US$834,000 a month for the next four years as a result. In the NBA – twenty years ago, the NBA transformed the sports media landscape by moving most of its games from free-to-air television to pay-TV cable networks. The question now is whether the NBA will spark another seismic shift by embracing the emerging new world of streaming TV. NBA legend, Charles Barkley has agreed to a 10-year deal with TNT for US$199Million. Interestingly, TNT’s broadcast rights deal with the NBA expires in 2025. So if Turner loses their NBA deal, Barkley could potentially go look for another network or a digital platform like Amazon or Apple. In boxing – Deontay Wilder is after a fight with Oleksandr Usyk or Anthony Joshua in a big stadium. His Coach, Malik Scott says “I’m not that big on Deontay fighting Andy Ruiz or Frank Sanchez. We’ve got three years left in this game and we want Deontay in the highest level fights possible. Finally in the AFL – you know that game Aussie blokes like to play in really tight shorts? Well West Coast Eagles star from Fiji, Nic Naitanui and his partner Brittany Bown uploaded a post to her social media account showing off their first born child Ezekiel Duke. Oh so cute!
