In the NRL Semi-finals

Both the Panthers and the Storm have received major boosts with star players named to return from injury for their NRL Semi-final clash this weekend in Sydney.

Jarome Luai will partner Nathan Cleary in the halves for Penrith, while the Storm have also been given a timely boost of their own with star halfback Jahrome Hughes named to return from a calf injury.

In Football

American soccer player, Matko Milijevic had his contract with Major League Soccer team CF Montreal ripped up after he played in an amateur league under a false name and punched an opponent.

Milijevic was convinced to play in the amateur league by a friend where the 22-year-old was an instant hit, scoring eight goals in six games, six of those goals in a single game.

But he was involved in a physical altercation with an opponent where he allegedly spat and hit his rival, which resulted in a life ban from the amateur league, shortly after which Milijevic’s real background as a professional footballer was uncovered.

In the NFL

Winners are grinners! Celebrities in town and on the sidelines during the University of Colorado’s 43-35 double-overtime win over Colorado State last weekend included: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, rappers Lil Wayne and Offset, NBA stars Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry and Portland Trail Blazers Head Coach Chauncey Billups.

In SportzBiz

While ESPN’s US$2.7Billion annual media rights fee is enormous, their NFL Week 1 New York Jets-Buffalo Bills telecast set a “Monday Night Football” record with 22.6 million viewers. Last season, “Monday Night Football” averaged just 13.8m viewers across 17 games, down 2% from 2021.

Between announcers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, plus the “ManningCast” duo of Peyton and Eli, ESPN is paying around US$50Million for its “Monday Night Football” broadcasters.

With the NFL seemingly hotter than ever, ESPN has even held talks with the NFL — among others — about acquiring an equity stake in the network.

Nah nah nah, nah nah nah!

In Combat sports

Boxing Coach Diego Arrua 58, died after suffering a massive heart attack during his wife Sabrina Perez’s interim WBC featherweight title bout against Australian Skye Nicolson last Friday night in Mexico.

Arrua collapsed between the ninth and tenth rounds of the fight after which his wife apparently boxed on, suffering a unanimous decision loss 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93 in favour of the Aussie.

And that’s a wrap!
