Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 05 Episode 77 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another bright, sunny and warm Tuesday morning 20 June 2023.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

In rugby

Rookie All Black, Tamaiti Williams 22, named by the selectors in their first All Blacks squad for 2023 with four other rookies, as one of 20 forwards; the big Crusaders prop is the heaviest All Black ever, weighing in at 144Kg of pure Maori muscle!

The second cab off this rank is former All Black back rower, Filo Tiatia weighing in at 138Kg.

The legendary All Black Wing, Jonah Lomu wasn’t far behind!

In rugby league

“I don’t think the Maroons fans will care who I am, they’ll be booing me just as much as the rest of the boys,” NSW Blues enforcer Payne Haas told NRL.com, saying he is prepared for a chorus of boos from the fans he usually calls his own in tomorrow night’s ORIGIN decider at Suncorp.

Determined to defy the odds and keep the series alive at “The Cauldron”, the Broncos star knows his Blues Brothers are in for a torrid reception at a ground where they have lost five of their last six ORIGIN games.

The Maroons meanwhile, are just 80 minutes away from retaining ORIGIN bragging rights and making it four series wins in the last five years.

In golf

American Wyndham Clark held his nerve to win his first Major championship at the 123rd US Open, for a one-shot win over Northern Irish star, Rory McIlroy, who missed out on a fifth Major title.

Clark, a 120-1 outsider at the start of the week, carded a closing 70 at Los Angeles Country Club to finish 10 under par, a shot ahead of McIlroy, taking home the US$3.5Million first prize.

In SportsBiz

The 2023 season of the Indian Premier League drew more than 500 million viewers, a 32% growth in television ratings on last season.

The very first IPL game of the 2023 season attracted 130 million viewers, compared with a record 115.1 million for the 2023 Super Bowl in the US.

And the 2023 IPL champions the Chennai Super Kings are valued at US$1.2Billion according to Forbes in 2022 – a bargain.

They have been touted as the “Manchester United of the IPL”, and may one day become one of the top global sporting franchises like the Dallas Cowboys at US$8B and Real Madrid at US$5B.

Part of India’s success is its 1.4 billion people, as well as its economic success and growing middle class. By 2025, India’s middle class will number 583 million people, or 41% of the population.

They have been supercharged by the digitisation of the Indian economy, with televisions and smart phones giving the average cricket lover access to their favourite teams.

And finally in boxing

Tim Tszyu went fishing within 90 minutes of his incredible KO win over Mexican Carlos Ocampo and by August will go into lockdown for a $300,000 US camp before fighting American star Jermell Charlo for all four of his Super Welterweight titles around the middle of October.

Of course Tszyu used dynamite and had a great catch!

And that’s a wrap!
