Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
In rugby league
The Storm beat Wests Tigers 6-28 in Campbelltown Stadium yesterday, in a game which featured the rarest of tries; Wests Tigers prop Alex Twal finally breaking one of the longest try ducks in the NRL, crossing for his first try in his 116-game career.
Parramatta meanwhile, was upset 30-34 by Manly in Round 3, but Eels skipper, Clint Gutherson said his forwards kept their receipts in a bid to square the ledger and even up the season series, and they did; climbing all over Manly 4-34 at CommBank Stadium last night, and into the top eight.
In rugby
The Chiefs will host the Super Rugby Pacific grand final after beating the Brumbies 6-19 in Hamilton last night.
Chiefs star Damien McKenzie scored 14 points from four penalties and a conversion, with All Blacks lock Brodie Retalick scoring the winning try in the 78th minute.
Meanwhile, Blues fans have just stopped crying, 48 hours after their team was hammered 52-15 by the Crusaders in Christchurch.
In Football and SportsBiz
Deloitte’s annual soccer finance review reveals that total revenue from the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 grew by 10% to US$18.8Billion during the 2021-22 season.
But believe it or not, they still made a collective loss of US$353.8Million due to increased wages.
Unsurprisingly, the EPL was Europe’s best performer, growing income by 12% for a record aggregate revenue of US$6.99B, but operating profits of US$585M were actually down $1.3M from the previous season.
La Liga was second in total revenue, at about half of the EPL, at US$3.6B. The Bundesliga followed with US$3.4B in revenue.
Italian Serie A Clubs brought in $2.6B, a decrease of 7%, while Ligue 1 saw record revenue of $2.2B in Lionel Messi’s first of two seasons at Paris St. Germain.
And finally in boxing
Tim Tszyu delivered the biggest statement of his career on the Gold Coast today, demolishing Mexican Carlos Ocampo with a staggering knockout in the first-round.
Ocampo did not land a single punch on the Australian champ, while Tszyu needed just 14 shots before the referee waved things off when Ocampo was knocked down for the second time, his head crashing against the ropes in a sickening finish, just one minute and 11 seconds into the fight.
The Mexican star is now 35-3, had only been stopped once in his career before, by unbeaten superstar Errol Spence Jr.
The unbeaten Australian is now 23-0, 17 KOs was gambling his upcoming shot at division king, American Jermell Charlo.
As I said earlier, “Ola, Ole Hombre!”
And that’s a wrap!
