In Rugby
The opening day of the World Rugby U20 Trophy 2023 in Nairobi saw wins for Samoa, Scotland, Spain and Uruguay, the latter only after a late try against USA.
Scotland ran out 64-33 winners over Zimbabwe. Samoa too did not have things all their own way against hosts Kenya, but two quick tries from Captain John Mata Samuelu and a double from Wing, William Hunt ensured the Pacific Islanders a 34-25 win.
Uruguay edged USA 31-33, Spain then wrapped up the opening day’s action with a 53-0 thrashing of Hong Kong China.
In rugby league
The Parramatta Eels secured a thrilling 25-24 win over the Gold Coast Titans at Commbank Stadium last night, thanks to a Mitchell Moses’ field goal in the dying minutes.
The lead changed hands five times throughout the game, with the hosts getting off to a flyer before a dramatic double sin bin halted Parramatta’s momentum.
New Zealand Warriors Coach Andrew Webster is firming to be named the “Dally M Coach of the Year” as his NZ Warriors look set to play September football, making the top eight for the first time since 2018.
The NZ Warriors thumped the Sharks 44-12 on Sunday to leapfrog them into fifth place on the NRL ladder.
At the Tour de France
Defending champion, Jonas Vingegaard and his closest rival, Tadej Pogacar crossed the treacherous Stage 15 alpine climb finish line side-by-side overnight, so Vingegaard maintains his wafer-thin 10 second lead.
At Wimbledon
Carlos Alcaraz defeated seven-time champion Novak Djokovic to claim his first Wimbledon title overnight, shattering the Serb’s dream of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam crown.
World number one Alcaraz recovered from dropping the first set and saving a set point in the second to win 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 after four hours and 42 minutes on Centre Court.
It was a second major for the 20-year-old Spaniard following his US Open title last year as he became Wimbledon’s third youngest Men’s champion.
Australian Open and French Open champion Djokovic had been bidding to equal Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles and match Margaret Court’s all-time mark of 24 Slams.
When he won his first major at the Australian Open in 2008, Alcaraz was still three months shy of his fifth birthday.
In football
Man U has agreed a deal with Inter to sign goalkeeper Andre Onana, sources have told ESPN.
The Cameroon international is set to have a medical before completing a €50 million move to Old Trafford. Erik10 is hoping Onana, who will replace David De Gea as their No. 1 Keeper will be available to travel with the squad for the preseason tour of the US, which kicks off with a stop in New York this week.
OK girls don’ t get too excited now!
In combat sports
“Are they gonna go ahead with it? Are they gonna make it happen? If it happens under the UFC banner I’m with it for sure, for sure. I’ll do a bit of work with Elon. I hope they go ahead with it. Their pockets might be long but talk is cheap,“ Conner McGregor on that fight.
And that’s a wrap!
