Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 05 Episode 74 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a cloudy, bright and warm Saturday morning 17 June 2023.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

In rugby league

Brad Fittler is approaching the biggest game of his ORIGIN career as a player and coach in ORIGIN II, under immense pressure to win, but his legacy for NSW is already set in stone.

The 51-year-old played a record 31 games for the Blues from 1990 to 2004 and captained NSW to multiple series wins in a period of dominance that saw Queensland win just four series from the time he debuted to when he hung up his boots.

As a Coach, Fittler came to the rescue of his State in 2018 with Queensland winning 11 of the 12 ORIGIN Series before that, dating back to 2006.

Frddie restored pride in New South Wales, winning back-to-back ORIGIN Series for the first time since 2005.

And Cowboys superstar Jason Taumalolo makes his timely return, as his side take on a depleted Panthers outfit at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville this weekend.

The Tongan enforcer has missed the last eight weeks with a knee injury, but makes a welcome return for the Cowboys, who will be without ORIGIN representatives Reuben Cotter, Valentine Holmes, Murray Taulagi, Jeremiah Nanai and Reece Robson.

In rugby

In the first Super Rugby Pacific semi-final last night in Christchurch: The Blues were absolutely hammered silly by the Crusaders 52-15, tarnishing a couple of north Islanders All Blacks chances.

Today we tip the Chiefs to chill out those awful Brumbies in funky Hamilton to set up an all-Kiwi grand final again.

In football

France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK are all set to broadcast the 2023 Women’s World Cup from Australia and New Zealand starting 20 July.

“This new deal will provide huge exposure for women’s football,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said, “which is a top priority for us.”

Infantino had previously threatened to black out the tournament in Europe’s biggest soccer markets due to lowball offers from the country’s media companies.

In SportBiz

Organisers expect 22,000 fans a day when the US Open begins on Thursday, boasting the largest purse in its history, totaling US$20Million, up from US$17.5M last year.

On Sunday, the winner will take home US$3.6M, nearly half a million dollars more than how much winner, Matt Fitzpatrick earned last year.

And finally in boxing

Tim Tszyu fronted journalists at yesterday’s media conference to reveal, that after the dog bite just three weeks ago, he said that he now felt like “I have a pit bull inside me.”

The fighter, who underwent emergency surgery for the dog bite added, “As soon as I put on the suit this morning for the press conference I felt it,” he grinned. “Someone is getting bitten.”

What else can we say except, “Ola, ole hombre, or as Pit Bull would say – woof woof”!

And that’s a wrap!
