Ki ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula & Welcome to Season 08 Episode 46 of Breakfast Bites the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny & bright Friday morning 16 February 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

In rugby union

Incoming Wallabies Head Coach Joe Schmidt has made a big impression on all five Australian Super Rugby Captains – Jake Gordon of the Waratahs, Allan Alaalatoa of the Brumbies, Tate McDermott of the Reds, Rob Leota of the Melbourne Rebels and Michael Wells of the Western Force.

This, after the Kiwi drove more than seven hours in and out of Auckland for an early morning coffee ahead of the Super Rugby Pacific season launch on Wednesday in New Zealand.

Instead of walking into his living room and jumping on a Zoom call, Schmidt woke up at 3am and made the three-and-a-half hour drive from Lake Taupo into Auckland for a 7am catch-up.

The 58-year-old Kiwi doesn’t officially start the role until March 1.

In rugby league

Catch the 2024 Harvey Norman All Stars Women’s game today Friday 16 February at 5.50pm at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Townsville followed by the Harvey Norman Men’s All Stars game at 8.10pm.

Also catch Round 1 of the NRL Pre-season Challenge this weekend.

In football: Oh oh, another dead man walking – former England boss and now Crystal Palace Manager Roy Hodgson’s days are numbered, after an alarming run of just three wins from 19 games.

According to the Daily Mail it’s “now a matter of when” in regards to Hodgson’s exit from Selhurst Park.

In combat sports

Former England football Captain and recently sacked football Club Manager, Wayne Rooney is considering a career switch, with Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn insisting the pair have spoken about Rooney lacing up the gloves.

In 2020, Hearn revealed that he would like to stage a charity fight against his former Man U and England teammate, Rio Ferdinand.

There is even mention of a scrap with Jake Paul.

In SportsBiz

A UK-based cricketer has been banned from all forms of the game for 17 and a half years over match-fixing claims relating to the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket League.

Rizwan Javed, a Club cricketer, was one of eight players and officials charged by the ICC last September.

The most notable of the group was Bangladesh international Nasir Hossain, who is now serving a two-year ban.

Only in America

One person was killed and 22 others — including nine children injured after a shooting at the Kansas City Chief’s Super Bowl parade route during festivities yesterday afternoon.

Panicked crowds raced for cover as gunfire erupted at Union Station towards the end of the victory parade — attended by tens of thousands of fans.

Three suspected shooters were taken into custody by police, according to local media.

So that’s a wrap!
