Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 05 Episode 39 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another blue sky Friday morning 12 May 2023.

Coming to you from paradise, on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!

In rugby union

Toulouse 7s First Round Games tonight 10.23pm Australia vs Japan, 10.45pm Samoa vs Ireland, 11.29pm New Zealand vs Canada and at 12.35am France vs South Africa then at 12.57am Fiji vs USA.

Our World Famous Tips for Super Rugby Pacific: the Chiefs to chomp the Reds at 7.05pm, followed by the Fijian Drua to fandjango the Force at 9.35pm. Tomorrow the Hurricanes to mojo Moana Pasifika, the Crusaders to crinkle the Blues, the NSW Waratahs to ruble the Rebels and the Brumbies to brongo the Highlanders.

In rugby league

Papua New Guinea Kumuls star, Justin Olam scored for the Storm, who won 24-16 against a gutsy Brisbane side at AAMI Park in Melbourne last night. The Storm winning streak is now 13 straight against the Broncos who remain top of the NRL ladder.

In football

“I don’t like it when Erling scores three goals and all the spotlight is on him. I am so jealous! Honestly! Erling, please no more goals, otherwise the papers won’t talk about me. Ibrahimović is right, he knows me perfectly. Maybe he can write another book,” Pep G responding to Zlatan Ibrahimović’s claim that when he was playing for Barcelona under Pep G as Coach, Guardiola did not support his development due to the Pep G’s ego.

And according to the Swedish striker, the same reasons will hinder Erling Haaland’s progress at Man City.

In boxing

Aljamain Sterling spoiled Henry Cejudo’s UFC comeback, taking out the former two-division champion in a split decision victory 47-48, 48-47 on two cards to defend his Bantamweight belt last Sunday.

Olympic gold medallist Cejudo was back in the UFC after three years on the sidelines – the only man to ever win Olympic gold and become a UFC Champion, winning both the Flyweight and Bantamweight straps before his shock retirement in 2020.

in the NBA

Steph Curry had 27 points and eight assists, Andrew Wiggins added 25 points, seven rebounds and five assist, as the defending champion Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers 121-106 in Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference semifinals.

LeBron James had 25 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers. Anthony Davis added 23 points and nine rebounds but went to the locker room late after appearing to take a hit in the head.

Now, it’s back to LA for Game 6 on Friday night with the Lakers 5-0 at home this postseason.

Golden State has to win one more time to bring Game 7 back to Chase Center on Sunday.

And in SportsBiz…

After another successful weekend that saw Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen again take the checkered flag, the Miami Grand Prix is exploring the possibility of starting its Formula 1 race at night.

“We’ve had some discussions about potentially doing that,” said Miami GP managing partner Tom Garfinkel, who is also President and CEO of the Miami Dolphins.

Running the race after the sun goes down would prevent the track from getting too hot. However, a move to later in the day would cause complications for F1’s huge international audience.

A night start in the US’s Eastern time zone would mean the race would get underway in the early-morning hours in most of Europe. In England — home base for many F1 teams — a race at 7pm in Miami would mean midnight GMT.

And that my friends is way past King Charles’ bed time!
