Fijian Drua was brilliant
In Super Rugby Round 3: The Fijian Drua was brilliant in crunching the Crusaders 24-25 in Lautoka yesterday. Willed on by a loud capacity crowd, they played scintillating, open-running rugby, with their special mix of speed, handling skills and power prevailing over the structured style of the Kiwis.
In fact, three of the Crusaders’ four tries came from driving mauls off lineouts – boring, but the home side kept striking back on the counter attack, running in tries from deep inside their half to deservedly take home the chocolates.
There were a number of standout players for the Fijian Drua who put their hand up for MVP, including midfielders, Apisai Vota and Iosefo Masi, plus Eroni Sau on the Wing. Loose forward “Smokin’ Joe” Joseva Tamani also put in a big shift, but sparkling halfback, Frank Lomani was the best on the day with his crisp service, clean passing and inspiring general play.
Super Rugby Round 3
In other Super Rugby Round 3 games: the Blues 25-19 Hurricanes, the Reds 17-23 Brumbies and Moana Pasifika 18-21 Western Force.
NRL rugby league
In rugby league – the Dolphins have produced another stunning upset, beating the Raiders 20-14 yesterday. Canberra looked headed for victory most of the game in Redcliffe, but a week after upstaging the Roosters, Wayne Bennett’s men again found a way to win, with rising Teen star Isaiya Katoa delivering the game-winning pass for Tabuai-Fidow to score.
Meanwhile in Melbourne, Craig Bellamy tore his team to shreds at AAMI Park yesterday, after the Bulldogs scored five tries to dominate the Storm in a 26-12 win despite their late comeback.
Josh Addo-Carr and Jacob Kiraz put in masterclasses, while the Storm could only manage two tries to Nelson Asofa Solomona and Jahrome Hughes.
And the Sydney Roosters beat the NZ Warriors 12-20.
Soccer football
In football – the French Football Federation has sacked their Head Coach just four months before the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, following a French revolution led by the team Captain and leading players. France is ranked fifth in the world.
Sportsbiz
In Sportsbiz – the New York Yankees rewarded superstar, Aaron Judge for his historic 2022 record-setting 62-homer season with a massive nine-year, US$360Million contract, and for good reason.
According to recent bond-market disclosures, Judge’s heroics helped sell US$344.7M in tickets and VIP hospitality suites — a jump of more than US$100M from 2021, of which US$61M was sold in the fourth quarter of 2022, for the 2023 season, thanks to Judge.
In total, the ballpark attracted 3.16 million fans in 2022, a big bounce back from COVID19-affected 2021. Pre-pandemic, in 2019, the Yankees sold US$336M in tickets.
So the Yankees are back!
In boxing – both fighters comfortably made weight yesterday with Tony Harrison claiming Tim Tszyu was trembling in their stare down because he was nervous. “He has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Is he going to be able to carry it tomorrow? I don’t think so.”
“I’m ready to go, this is my moment,” Tszyu responded.
Let’s get ready to R U M B L E! Today the big fight *is this afternoon around 3pm.
