In rugby union
Finally, after over a century of English-led northern hemisphere infatuation with forward play, World Rugby has made some rule changes to speed up the game and make it more attractive to watch:
· It will no longer be possible to choose a scrum from a free-kick. Free-kicks must either be tapped or kicked to encourage more ball in flow.
· The ball must be played after the maul has been stopped once, not twice.
· Play on at a lineout if the ball has not been thrown in straight but only if the lineout is uncontested.
In rugby league
BREAKING NEWS: The Sydney Roosters have won the David Fifita sweepstakes, with the damaging Tongan backrower set to join the Tricolours on a four-year deal from 2025.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Fifita’s deal with the Roosters will be worth A$3.3Million over four years.
In football
Kylian Mbappe’s time at his hometown club Paris Saint-Germain is limping to a sad conclusion in the wake of their shock UEFA Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.
The French superstar is expected to finally join Real Madrid this off-season. Real beat Bayern Munich 1-2 in their semifinal.
In combat sports
As he gears up for his much-anticipated clash with Oleksandr Usyk on 18 May in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Tyson Fury has uploaded an eye-catching photo of himself in training, showing off his ripped physique.
At stake are all the World Heavyweight Boxing titles, which would make the winner, the premier heavyweight of the century.
Finally, in SportsBiz
TKO the umbrella company of UFC and WWE earned US$629Million in revenue in the first quarter, beating Wall Street estimates by $20M, according to Zacks Equity Research.
The company suffered a net loss of US$249.5M in the quarter, as well as decreases in cash flow, largely due to taking a US$335M charge related to settling the UFC fighter antitrust lawsuit, which was viewed as a favorable outcome for UFC.
TKO’s stock is up more than 22% this year at US$98.27 yesterday.
And that’s a wrap!
