In Netball
The Adelaide Thunderbirds are the 2023 Australian Super Netball champions after claiming a thrilling extra time 60-59 win over the NSW Swifts.
English import Eleanor Cardwell stood tall in the thrilling final five minutes, and was named MVP last night.
While it’s heartbreak for the Swifts as they sought their third Super Netball crown, it’s pure elation for the Thunderbirds as players and staff were left in tears on the sidelines.
In Rugby
Marika Koroibete flew down the left wing to put Australia into a surprise 5-0 lead in the eighth minute, but the visitors were on the back foot for pretty much the entire game after that.
Kurt-Lee Arendse continued his free-scoring start to international rugby with his eighth, ninth and 10th tries in only his eighth test, among South Africa’s six straight tries as the world champions steamrolled Australia 12-43 in the opening round of the Rugby Championship overnight.
The win was also a victory for South Africa’s strength in depth ahead of its Rugby World Cup title defense this year, as coach Jacques Nienaber didn’t even use a string of his first-choice players, preferring to instead send them to New Zealand early to prepare for a test against the All Blacks next Saturday in Auckland.
Meanwhile in Mendoza Argentina this morning, the All Blacks trashed Los Pumas 12-41 with all their stars scoring – Dane Coles, Ardie Savea, Jordie Barrett, Reiko Ioane, Aaron Smith plus debutant Emoni Narawa.
In rugby league

Eventually, the buzz died down as reality hit — this is going to take time. Wemby, who has been hailed as the best prospect since LeBron James, struggled against strength and quickness.
His shot wasn’t falling — Wemby missed seven of his first eight attempts — and even shot an air ball on a three-pointer and seemed fatigued in the second half.
Wemby finished with nine points on 2-for-13 shooting, eight rebounds and five blocks in 27 minutes for the Spurs 76-68 win over the Hornets.
In the Tour de France
Race legend, Mark Cavendish has crashed out of the Tour de France with a fractured collarbone, forcing him to abandon the race and with it, his hopes of winning a record-breaking 35th Stage.
The British cyclist fell to the ground during a pile-up in the pelaton, around 60Km from the end of stage eight between Libourne to Limoges.
Cavendish, from the Isle of Man, has been level with Belgian great Eddy Merckx on 34 victories and had been bidding to pull ahead in this his last Tour de France.
He came within a few metres of a historic victory in Bordeaux yesterday, but he was pipped at the finish line by Belgian’s Jasper Philipsen after suffering a mechanical problem with his gears.
No change at the front of the overall Tour de France race with Denmark’s defending champion, Jonas Vingegaard still leading Slovenian star Tadej Pogacar.

Brazil’s pro soccer Clubs are getting a massive financial boost from New York-based Serengeti Asset Management and Brazil’s Life Capital Partners, jointly purchasing a 20% stake in the commercial rights of most Clubs in Liga Forte Futbol.
The 50-year deal, values their stake at about US$500Million, will see the investment firms pursuing larger international media rights.
Despite Brazil’s five World Cup titles, nine Copa América championships, and a legacy burnished by international superstars such as Pelé and Neymar, Brazil pro soccer has lagged far behind top European pro leagues such as the Premier League and La Liga, in part due to significant financial imbalances between individual clubs.
And finally in boxing
Francis Ngannou versus Tyson Fury looks to be a done deal. According to a report quoting multiple sources that the crossover fight is “expected to be announced very soon.” The Gypsy King also hinted earlier this week at a location, with big money coming from the Middle East.
“We’ve had a lot of offers from the Middle East at the moment to host that fight over the summer,” Fury said on a podcast. “The purse is private information, but let’s say it’s 10, 20, 30, 50 times the amount UFC fighters make,” he added just to poke UFC Prez Dana White.
