Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 06 Episode 64 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Thursday morning 08 September 2023.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

In rugby

First choice Flying Fijians fly-half, Caleb Muntz will take no further part in the RWC2023 with an ACL injury suffered in training on Monday. A replacement has not been named but insiders say it will be former Fiji 7s star, Vilimoni Botitu.

Fiji born All Black flyer, Emoni Narawa has also been ruled out of the RWC2023 with a recurring back injury and he will leave camp after the All Blacks first games against France on Saturday morning.

In Rugby League

Our tips for the NRL Qualifying Finals this weekend: We tip the Brisbane Broncos to hokeypokey the Melbourne Storm at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, and in the Second Qualifying Final, we tip the New Zealand Warriors to kittykat the Panthers at BlueBet Stadium on Saturday.

In the FIBA Basketball World Cup hosted by the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia

Canada beat Slovenia 89-100 in Manila to set up a semi-final showdown with Serbia on Friday, while Germany ended Latvia’s dream run at the tournament with a nervy 81-79 win to squeeze into the semi-finals and a clash with the USA.

Debutants Latvia had already beaten defending champions Spain and Tokyo Olympics silver-medalists France on their way to the quarter-finals.

In SportzBiz

Another day, another Messi Magic Milestone. This time, Apple TV gained more than 100,000 subscribers to MLS Season Pass on the day of Lionel Messi’s first game with Inter Miami last month. Those figures climb even higher when factoring in the weeks surrounding the superstar’s arrival in the US.

In Football

“It started with a kiss . . .” Spanish Football El Presidento, Luis Rubiales is really a dead man walking!

Jenni Hermoso has filed an official complaint to police over “that kiss” at the FIFA World Cup final. In her complaint, the Spanish footballer accuses Rubiales of sexual assault, because she says, the kiss was not consensual.

The complaint, which was filed on Tuesday, is key for a preliminary investigation, which prosecutors at Spain’s top criminal court have opened for the alleged crime of “sexual assault”, to move forward.

Why doesn’t he just resign?

In Combat sports

Apart from being among the most dangerous fighter anywhere on the planet, Kiwi-Nigerian UFC Middleweight Champion, Israel Adesanya boasts 8.3 million followers on Instagram.

One of whom approached UFC293 US challenger, Sean Strickland on a Sydney street last Saturday night and said: ‘Izzy is gunna f… you up’.

So Strickland, without hesitation, whacked him. Telling Fox Sports Australia yesterday that “Anybody who wanna come up to me and run your f…ing mouth, I’ll smack you like I smack anybody else.”

OK great, see you in UFC293 Sean!

In Athletics

And only in the USA – well south of the border actually – in Mexico!

A staggering 11,000 runners out of a 30,000-person field were disqualified after they cut some part of the course during the Mexican City Marathon on 27 August, the Spanish newspaper Marca reports.

Runners were disqualified after missing checkpoints placed every five kilometers.

Some runners allegedly used their vehicles and public transport to cut the 26.2 mile course.

So the BIG question is – is it Mexicans in general, or just Mexican marathon runners who are cheats?

And that’s a wrap!
