Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 05 Episode 06 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on a partly cloudy but bright Good Friday morning 07 April 2023.
Coming to you from paradise, on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!
In rugby union and rugby league: After five years, three trials, nine months in prison, an appeal and for the second time, found guilty over the same incident – sexually assaulting a woman in 2018, Jarryd Hayne headed home to spend Easter with his family after he was let out on bail by Judge Graham Turnbull SC in a Sydney Court yesterday.
Hayne will face court again on 08 May for sentencing.
Meanwhile, the Storm cruised to a 28-8 win over the Roosters last night, on the back of a Cameron Munster master class and three tries from Xavier Coates at AAMI Park.
With their third straight win, the Storm moved into the top four, while the chooks, who scored first, faded again.
In Boxing: “I will give you every drop of sweat. Every drop of blood, every ounce of energy I have … you are going to get the absolute best of The Rock,” some 20 years later those words spoken by Dwayne Johnson at Wrestlemania, are inspiring Kiwi-Nigerian star, Israel Adesanya for his upcoming battle with Brazilian warrior, Alex Pereira in UFC287 on Sunday.
In football: The biggest rivalry in Dutch football, between the two biggest cities in the Netherlands, with Feyenoord from Rotterdam hosting Ajax from Amsterdam, in a clash known as De Klassieker, delivered another ugly low as Feyenoord fans attacked Ajax player – former EPL star, Davy Klaassen who scored in the second half to make it 2-1 to the visitors.
But when he celebrated near the corner flag, he was struck on the head by an object thrown from the crowd, causing his head to bleed and the crowd to go nuts, forcing the Referee to rush both teams off the field for nearly half an hour before play resumed after a Feyenoord Coach addressed his fans over the PA system, calling for calm.
Meanwhile in the relative calm of the EPL, Marcus Rashford sent Manchester United back into the English Premier League Top Four with the winner, as the Red Devils beat Brentford 1-0, while Newcastle won 5-1 at West Ham to stay third above Man U on goal difference.
And only in America: Attorneys representing two former college athletes filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA seeking retro-active educational payments for college athletes from 2018-2020.
They argued that in light of “the Alston ruling” — which allowed college athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness — at least 5,000 and as many as 20,000 athletes are now owed back pay for the 2018 to 2020 seasons.
These same Attorneys, who won the Alston case in 2021, are claiming damages of at least US$200Million, and as much as US$1Billion for the affected college athletes.
You just gotta ask – is this really for the benefit of the athletes, or er the lawyers?
In The Masters at Augusta, the Honourary Starters getting the 87th tournament officially underway early this morning, featured three-times winner from South Africa, Gary Player and six-time winning legend Jack Nicklaus, plus Tom Watson.
Closer to home, Kiwi star, Ryan Fox who has played and won at the world famous Vatuwaqa Golf Course in Suva, Fiji is teeing off with his not so famous golfing Father as his caddy – former All Black, Grant Fox.
