Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 07 Episode 62 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a gloriously sunny Monday morning 04 December 2023.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

In rugby union Dubai 7s Day One

Maddison Levi and her sister Teagan have inspired Australia’s rugby women to a blistering triumph in the season-opening Dubai 7s, while dynamiting New Zealand’s world-record 41-match unbeaten streak.

Dual-code star Maddison ended a magnificent tournament with a world series record of 12 tries in a single event as the Aussie World Cup winners defeated their great trans-Tasman rivals 26-19 in the final this morning.

Australia became the first team ever to win the same world series women’s event four times in a row in the UAE desert.

In doing so, they also ended the New Zealanders’ air of invincibility as the reigning World 7s Series champions were finally beaten after a year when they set a women’s world record of 41 straight series wins, which began after Australia had beaten them in the 2022 Dubai final.

France beat Fijiana 14-38 in their quarter-final.

In the Men’s quarter-finals: Fiji beat Ireland 24-29 and Argentina beat Samoa 14-21. In the semis South Africa 14-7 Fiji and Argentina 21-19 New Zealand.

The All Blacks 7s beat Fiji 12-17 in their bronze medal match, before South Africa 12-7 Argentina to defend their Dubai 7s Men’s title.

In rugby league

Australia’s very own Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe is reportedly working with the NRL ahead of the game’s historic season-opening double-header in Las Vegas in March.

The governing body had hoped for Crowe and Hugh Jackman to be on board with promoting the Round 1 Vegas clash between Manly and South Sydney starting with the NRL’s official launch in Vegas later this month.

But at this stage neither will be at the event, according to the Herald.

The Sea Eagle and Rabbitohs will kick off the 2024 season at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas followed by a clash between the Roosters and Broncos.

In Football

Lionel Messi is not ruling out another bid for FIFA World Cup glory with Argentina in 2026, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, despite acknowledging that time is working against him.

“I’m not thinking about the World Cup and I’m not saying 100 per cent that I won’t be there because anything can happen. Because of my age, the most normal thing is that I won’t be there. But we’ll see,” Messi said in an interview.

In combat sports

Ryan Garcia had to get through some rough moments and some boos from the crowd during his comeback bout against rugged Mexican Lightweight contender Oscar Duarte, but the California star scored an eighth-round KO on Saturday at a packed Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, to rebound from his high-profile stoppage loss to Gervonta Davis in April.

So the kid is back.

In SportsBiz

The centerpiece venue of the 2032 Summer Olympics in Brisbane is now set to be demolished and rebuilt, further accelerating a wave of stadium development across much of Australia.

The Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly known as The Gabba, will be torn down and replaced with a new A$1.8Billion venue that will replace a 128-year-old, 36,000-seat venue with a new one seating up to 80,000.

Work on the new stadium will stretch from late 2025 to 2030.

And that’s a wrap!
