Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 06 Episode 02 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Sunday morning 02 July 2023.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

In rugby

Noticed how southern hemisphere rugby nations all took a bashing from their northern hemisphere opponents in the second round of the World Rugby U20 Championship in South Africa this past week?

Is the pendulum really swinging north or was this just a glitch?

Meanwhile the whole of New Zealand is still recovering from the battering they took from cyclone Pisolo Tuilagi!

In rugby league

Records tumbled as the North Queensland Cowboys utterly dismantled a hapless Wests Tigers outfit in a 74-0 mauling at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

The 74-point victory was the biggest winning margin since 1935 and the third-biggest winning margin in history along with the equal-third most points scored in a game.

Valentine Holmes 30-point haul was also the most by an individual Cowboys player in the Club’s history, with the superstar centre bagging two tries and nailing 11 conversions.

Selwyn Cobbo had ‘a night to remember’ – scoring three tries, which included a try of the year contender as the Broncos beat the Dolphins 16-24 in another entertaining “Battle of Brisbane”.

TV commentator Andrew Voss called it, “The Selwyn Cobbo Magic Show at the Gabba.”

In Sportsbiz

The NBA’s free agency period opened at 8am yesterday morning — and it didn’t take long for massive deals to be locked in.

A reported US$1Billion in salaries was handed out in the first hour of the window opening as franchises splashed the cash.

Kyrie Irving the biggest free agent to be taken off the board, agreeing to a three-year, US$126Million deal to return to the Dallas Mavericks.

Four-time NBA champion Draymond Green looked set to leave the Warriors – where he has played his entire career – but instead signed a new four-year deal worth US$100M.

In football

The Premier League transfer window is also officially open, and deals are flying in thick and fast ahead of the new season.

Chelsea signed Senegal international, Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal on Friday, after he impressed in La Liga last season with 12 goals in 26 appearances.

While Kai Havertz crossed London to join Arsenal, Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly moved to Saudi Arabia and midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek joined AC Milan after spending his entire career as a Chelsea player.

A deal has also been agreed between Chelsea and Manchester United for the sale of Mason Mount.

In boxing

Are we confused or what? – in a massive blow to Australian boxing superstar Tim Tszyu, his long-awaited world title unification fight with undisputed champ Jermell Charlo has been ruled out.

Undisputed World Super Welterweight Champion Charlo (35-1-1) will instead move up two weight divisions to fight undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) on 30 September.

Jermell and Jermall Charlo are twin brothers and Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) is the WBC Middleweight Champion, but he hasn’t fought for two years.

Jermell, Jarmall what the hell, both these Charlo bros are running from Tszyu!

And that’s a wrap!
