Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 05 Episode 59 of Breakfast Bites, the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS PODCAST, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a muggy and grey Thursday morning 01 June 2023.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

And we start with rugby league

The Queensland Maroons have left the NSW Blues shell-shocked, running away 26-18 winners in the opening game of the ORIGIN Series 2023 at Adelaide Oval last night.

With one man in the sin bin and another forward ruled out of the game, Queensland was on the ropes, but as we’ve heard before, those final seven minutes shouldn’t be a surprise; Billy Slater’s men pulled off another Maroons miracle, to take a 1-0 lead as the series heads to Suncorp Stadium for ORIGIN II.

Despite falling to a 10-0 deficit early, the NSW Blues were able to claw their way back to a 18-16 lead and looked set for victory after Tom Flegler was sent to the sin bin in the 68th minute.

The plan for Freddie’s mob was simple, defend their lead and perhaps even add another try to their tally to seal the series opener, except nobody told the Maroons.

In rugby union

Samoa and Fijiana have qualified for the inaugural World Rugby WXV competition that commences later this year, after Round 2 of the 2023 Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship on the Gold Coast yesterday, where Samoa trounced PNG 0-83 and Fijiana struggled against Tonga 12-45.

In football

Erling Haaland already has one trophy, individual prizes and a series of new records to show, for his first season in England, and he is still only getting started.

Haaland’s incredible 36 Premier League goals set a new single-season record.

The 22-year-old has collected a clean sweep of Premier League Awards for Player, Young Player and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards.

But it is two more pieces of silverware that will turn Haaland’s remarkable season into a historic one.

Beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final on Sunday morning and Inter Milan a week later in the Champions League final and City will become just the second English side to ever do the treble.

In NBA

Bob Myers, who turned the Golden State Warriors into a sports colossus has stepped down as President and General Manager after 12 years.

A prominent player agent before moving into team operations, Myers was the architect for four NBA championships and a two-time NBA Executive of the Year.

Under Myers, the Warriors became the NBA’s most valuable franchise and one of the world’s leading sports brands with an estimated team value of US$7Billion.

Myers also signed Steph Curry to two historic “supermax” contracts, worth more than US$415Million in total and helped turn the Warriors guard into a global superstar.

In boxing

Australia’s World Bantamweight Boxing Champion, Ebanie Bridges has claimed that she would have sex with Conor McGregor after meeting the UFC legend at a fight in Dublin earlier this month.

Bridges was in the Irishman’s home town to watch Katie Taylor’s homecoming bout with Chantelle Cameron for the undisputed Super-Lightweight title a few weeks ago.

And on the night, she ran into McGregor at ringside, with the pair posing for an awkward picture where she claimed she was “manhandled”.

Geez girl keep a lid on it.

And that’s a wrap!
